Sushi is a food of Japanese origin consisting of steamed vinegared rice combined with other ingredients. The ingredients and forms of sushi presentation vary, but the common ingredients are seafood. According to the forms, sushi is grouped into Chirash, Maki, Nigiri, and Oshi sushi.


(Hand-shaped sushi)



Nigiri sushi consists of an oblong mound of sushi rice that the chef presses into a small rectangular box between the palms of the hands, usually with a bit of wasabi, and a topping draped over it. The toppings are typically fish such as salmon, tuna or other seafood.



Makis (Rolled Sushi)

Makis are rolls. Many sushi beginners try vegetarian rolls, the best makis are made of pieces of fish, crab or shrimp rolled with crispy tempura pieces, avocado, cucumbers, and other vegetables rolled into a sheet of rice or seaweed. The combination of soft raw fish, crispy tempura and vegetables is actually quite amazing.




Sashimi (sliced raw fish)

The word sashimi means "pierced body" and is a Japanese delicacy. It consists of very fresh raw meat, most commonly fish, sliced into thin pieces. Sashimi often is the first course in a formal Japanese traditional meal, but it can also be the main course, presented with rice and miso soup. Japanese people believe that sashimi is considered the finest dish in Japanese cuisine, should be eaten before other strong flavors affect the palate.



Temaki (Cone-shaped maki)


Temaki is a large cone-shaped piece of nori (black seaweed wrapper) on the outside and the ingredients spilling out the wide end. A typical temaki is about 4 inch long, and is eaten with fingers because it is too awkward to pick it up with chopsticks.


Chirashi Sushi

Chirashi sushi is a bawl of sushi rice topped with a variedty of sashimi and garmishes. There is no formula for the ingredients and they are either chef's choice or simetimes specified by the customer. It is commonly eaten because it is filling, fast and easy to make.
